Can Tires on 2002 Karavan Trailer Be Upgraded to Larger Size

Updated 11/13/2025 | Published 10/27/2025

Question:

Hope this finds you well. I have a Karavan KB 1000-46. Model 2002. Boat trailer. I was hoping to upgrade the tires on the trailer from the standard 4.89-12 to a 13-in wheel. If thats not possible, I was hoping to at least go up to a 5.30 x 12. Is this possible? Can you recommend a product/products? Thank you for your time and effort in advance

Hi Nadim; you will need to measure your existing clearance to see if this is possible. Moving to a 5.30-12 like the # AM30710 you were looking at will result in about 1/2" of clearance lost. This probably won't be a problem. An ST175/80D13 like # AM3S130 will be quite a bit larger so you would lose more like 2" of clearance which is quite a lot. You want at least 3" on top and 2" on the inside of the tire for proper clearance.

Both of those wheels have a 4 on 4 bolt pattern. If you have a different bolt pattern let me know, along with your clearance, and I'll see what else is available.

Hey Nadim, what did you find when you measured the clearance on your Karavan trailer? Once you know that space, it should be clear whether the 5.30-12 or the 13-inch wheel will fit best. Let me know what you found—I can help narrow it down from there.
