Does Prime Guard Antifreeze Lubricate And Protect Seals And Fittings On RV or Boat?

Published 10/20/2025

Question:

Does the Prime Guard antifreeze lubricate seals and fittings too, or just prevent freezing?

It actually does both, Kurk. The non-flammable formulas like Prime Guard Glycerin Free RV Antifreeze -50F # PG36ZR and -100F # PG96ZR help keep seals conditioned while preventing corrosion in fittings. That’s one reason they’re popular with Rv and boat owners who store for months unused in the winter.

The standard ethanol based antifreezes are typically fine, but they don't lubricate seals and fittings like the two options above do.

Have you noticed any stiffness or cracking in your faucets or pump seals before?

I’ve been using the ethanol-based Prime Guard #PG56ZR for a couple years and haven’t noticed any issues yet. Is it still worth switching to the glycerin-free one just for the seal conditioning?

@Lisa Hey there. If your fittings and pump seals are still soft and you’re storing in a mild climate, you’re perfectly fine sticking with the # PG56ZR. Where the glycerin-free # PG36ZR and the premium # PG96ZR really shine is in long-term or outdoor storage, where the seals sit dry for months and can harden over time in extreme climates. The alcohol-free formulas keep them conditioned, almost like a light lubricant film inside the line.
