What Info Is Needed to Add Brakes to a Trailer Axle

Updated 11/13/2025 | Published 10/16/2025

Question:

Armature Plates: I have a 50’s airstream Bubble. It was supposed to come with e brakes, but it didn’t. What do you know about armature plates that bolt to the inside of the drum for the magnets to contact? Thanks, Larry

Hey Larry, we can definitely help you add brakes to your trailer hubs as long as the axles were made within the past couple decades. What you described is standard for electric trailer drum brakes and how they operate with the armature using a magnet to grab the inside of the drum and apply the brakes. If you can get me the axle capacity and the wheel bolt pattern of your hub I can get you what you would need to add brakes to your trailer axle. I also attached a help article on adding brakes for you to check out as well.

Hey Larry, were you able to find the axle capacity and wheel bolt pattern for your Airstream Bubble? Once you have those details, I can help narrow down the right brake setup for your trailer. Let me know what you find—I'm here if you need a hand.
