E-Bike Rack and Swing Away Adapter that Can Clear Rear Spare of Sprinter

Updated 10/30/2025 | Published 10/06/2025

Question:

I would like to transport two 65 lb without batteries RadRover Step-Thru Electric Fat Bikes Version 1 with 3 inch wide tires on my 2019 Chevy Colorado truck and a 2007 Mercedes Sprinter van. The Saris Swing Away Hitch Extender for Bike Racks - 2inch Hitches Part Number: SAR36VR appears to be a good choice to enable access to the truck bed and the rear door on the van. However, the van has a spare tire mounted on the rear which would require a 17 inch space between the bike and the van rear door. Can you recommend a dual ebike rack that provides a 17 inch gap in conjunction with the Saris Hitch Extender? It would also be nice if the ebike rack folded up when not in use and had a ramp to assist in loading.

Hey Rankin, the Thule Easyfold XT part # TH903202 with the swing away hitch adapter part # SAR36VR would work great for you and has the needed clearance to get past the rear spare of your van. This rack folds up really nice and small when not in use for easier install/removal as well as storage. Plus it has a ramp built in to make loading and unloading bikes easier as well!

Hey Rankin, how did the Thule EasyFold XT work out with the Saris swing away hitch on your van and truck? Your results could help others trying to clear a rear spare while carrying heavier e-bikes. Sharing what you found would be a big help to the next person setting up a similar combo.
