What Does it Take to Convert Hydraulic Drum Brakes to Electric

Updated 09/04/2025 | Published 08/31/2025

Question:

So I have an older boat trailer, dual axle, total load 12500 lbs. Hydraulic drum brakes with a surge actuator. The brakes are defunct. Not sure if its a bad break, the actuator is busted, not sure, dont care. I want to replace it all with electric. Can I... replace the coupler with a straight solid coupler and replace the drum brakes with electric drum brakes? Is it as simple as figuring out the right sized drum, pulling off the brakes and replacing them with electric, connecting the blue wire straight from the plug to the line side of the 4 brakes, and grounding the other side of the brake wires? Tired of chasing brake fluid leaks, and want more control... thank you!

Hey Robert, it really is that simple. You need to find the correct brake assemblies which is based on the size or the axle capacity, ground the assemblies like you said, run 10 gauge wire back to the 7-way like with the # 10-1-1 and as long as you have a brake controller in your truck you're good.

Does the trailer have a 7-way currently and do you have a brake controller?
