How to Add Gooseneck Hitch to 1979 Ford F-250

Updated 08/27/2025 | Published 08/26/2025

Question:

I have a 1979 Ford F250 2wd 8 bed truck. I need to add a gooseneck hitch to the truck which it never had before. What options are available for a truck this old?

Hi Bruce; I have two options for you but custom fit gooseneck hitches didn't start until 1980 for the F-250. The first is to use the B&W Turnoverball Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch for Flatbed Trucks # BWGNRK1500. This is pretty much a universal gooseneck hitch so it will require welding and potentially some fabrication to get it installed.

The second option is to install 5th wheel rails and then use an adapter. You can add the Reese Universal Base Rails # RP30035 which will allow you to use the Curt Above-Bed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch for Fifth Wheel Rails # 16055. The disadvantage to this setup is you will always have the rails sitting in the bed of the truck. With the Turnoverball you will have full access when not in use.

Is this a really old work truck or a project for fun?

This is an old work truck that needs gooseneck functionality added to it.

@BruceG then I would probably go with the rails and adapter unless you have the tools to install the other one yourself.
