Can the OptiMate Y-Splitter Cable be Used to Split a Solar Panel Power to 2 Different Controllers?

Updated 08/12/2025 | Published 08/10/2025

Question:

I am looking to use this Y splitter to split the power coming in from my Battery Tender Solar Panel to two controllers so I can them keep two batteries connected at the same time - I have found that you cannot split after the controller, so I need to split before “it” and add a second controller running the 35 watt Batter tender solar panel

Hey John, thanks for reaching out!

The Y-Splitter Cable # MA93BR is designed for a single battery source to send out power to 2 different locations, but it won't work by connecting 2 different solar controllers to the same solar input. You can only have 1 solar controller connected in, and if you have 2 of them in this splitter, they won't play nice together.

Just so I understand, you're trying to take a single solar panel input, and then have that power feed out to 2 different controllers and 2 different battery banks?

You are correct - that is what I was hoping to do. Looks like I will have to have 2 solar panel Battery Tenders instead. (One for the electric jack on the front of the cargo trailer and one for the side by side inside the cargo trailer). Thanks.

@JohnD Yes, that's what you'll need to do in this instance. Is there a specific brand you're looking at, or a certain size and way you want to mount the solar panels?

@JonG - I already have a Battery Tender 35 W panel for the sxs, will likely get a 17 watt battery tender for the electric jack battery

@Jd Would something like the OptiMate Solar Duo Solar Charging System with Controller # MA79JR work?
