Is it Possible to Tow Fifth Wheel Trailer with Ford F-150 with 5.5 ft Bed
Updated 08/13/2025 | Published 08/04/2025 >
Question:
I have an F150 Super Cab with 5.5 short bed and am considering a lighter 5th wheel. I like the Gen Z product and need help deciding what I need to buy for the truck. Looking for an inexpensive route. Truck is not set up in for 5th wheel. Could you help me? Thanks

Hey John, for a truck with as short of a bed as your F-150 with a 5.5 foot bed there's only one way you can tow a fifth wheel trailer and have the needed turning clearance and that is with a Sidewinder pin box to replace the pin box of the trailer and a fixed fifth wheel hitch as the Sidewinder is only way to have enough clearance since it moves the pivot point back 22.5 inches.
To pick out a Sidewinder we need to know what pin box model your trailer has currently. Most common is Lippert 1621 and more recently the Rhino which the part # RP34FR fits.
To pick out a fifth wheel hitch solution I would need to know what year F-150 you have.

Thanks Jameson. We haven't bought the trailer yet, but once we do, I'll reach back out. Do I have to have a 5th Wheel hitch, or can I go with a ball, which gives me more room in the bed?
