Question:

I want to add solar to my 2003 winnabego motor home It is 24 ft. The 2 12 batteries are charged by shore power or generator or the truck engine running. not sure what product will work. also does the solar panel controller hook directly to the batteries or is there some type of protection first.

Hello Fred,

Happy to make sure we get you the right set-up for you 24ft Winnebago.

I would go with the Rich Solar RV Solar Charging Kit w/ 3 Panels - 12V - 600 Watts # RS47VR. This kit is going to come with everything you need:

- 3 x 200 Watt Monocrystalline Solar Panel(RS-M200)
- 1 x 40A MPPT Solar Charge Controller(RS-MPPT40P)
- 1 x 20' #10 Gauge Solar Cable (Red), connects the solar panel to the controller(RS-20101)
- 1 x 20' #10 Gauge Solar Cable (Black), connects the solar panel to the controller(RS-20101)
- 1 x 10' #8 Gauge Battery Cable (Red), connects the controller to the battery(RS-810)
- 1 x 10' #8 Gauge Battery Cable (Black), connects the controller to the battery(RS-810)
- 3 x Mounting Z Brackets (one set of 4)(RS-ZB4C)
- 1 x 15A Inline Fuse Holder with Fuse(RS-SC15F)

Adding 600 watts of solar to your 24 foot motorhome is a great upgrade because it provides plenty of off-grid power to run essentials like lights, fans, a fridge, and to keep your batteries topped off, without needing to rely on a noisy generator (not ideal for powering your air conditioner). It gives you more freedom to camp anywhere, stay longer without hookups, and keep your battery bank healthy, especially if you're using lithium. It’s a solid balance of power and roof space for most travel and boondocking needs.

The Rich Solar BRAVO 50 # RS92FR (which is included) hooks directly to your batteries so it can safely manage the charging process in real time. It protects your system by preventing overcharging, overheating, and reverse flow of power, and it adjusts automatically for different battery types like AGM or lithium. It also helps bring dead batteries back to life and is built tough enough to handle rough conditions. Overall, it makes sure your batteries stay healthy and charged without you having to worry.

What all are you looking to power with the batteries when camping off grid? What kind of inverter do you have?

Thank you for the information you provided. I have purchased to solar packages from you folks and installed in campers that did not have solar and elementary methods of charging 12v batteries. both worked great. The materials and instructions were excellent. I purchased this motor home this last year and am becoming familiar with it. Reply to your email. I do not have an inverter that I know of. when i do not have shore power I run the generator for 110v power. at present my batteries run down after the 3 rd day with my generator running 4 hrs. each day. the loads are. water pump when we use the sinks, shower, toilet. lights ( I converted them all to LED The refrigerator runs on LP plus some electric USB charging stations laptops When the generator is running I charge my boat trolling motor

@FredE It sounds like you do not currently run any of your appliances from your batteries then. What an inverter does is take the DC currents from your battery and turns them into an AC current to run your appliances, it does the opposite of what your converter does that you ordered from us last year, the # PD4135K. If you were looking to add an inverter as well, I would go with the Progressive Dynamics 1000 Watt Inverter w/ Transfer Switch # PD94FR. What kind of boat do you have? I was just out at Mark Twain Lake here in Missouri this last weekend on our Ranger doing some bass fishing, I didn't catch anything to brag about. Just happy it wasn't a tournament day =)
