Troubleshooting Reese 5th Wheel Jaw Not Opening Up Fully When Pulling Handle
Updated 09/02/2025 | Published 08/01/2025 >
Question:
I have a Reese 5th Wheel Slider Hitch 18K and the jaw opens up about 3/4 of the way when you pull the handle, is this normal or is there an adjustment on it to get it to open all the way. Thank you for your help!

Hey Terry,
The most common issue with the jaw not opening fully is insufficient lubrication. Make sure there is no debris and that you are lubricating the jaw and pivot points properly with a white lithium grease. It could also be a damaged handle. You'll want to inspect and see if there is any damage to the handle that you can see causing that. If none of those are the issue it may be caused by the truck and trailer not being on level ground when hooking up causing un wanted tension.
If none of those work for you let me know and I can continue to troubleshoot for you.
