Solution for Carrying 4-Bike Rack with 2012 Coachman Clipper Pop Up

Updated 08/15/2025 | Published 07/19/2025

Question:

I have a 2021 Subaru Ascent Premium - we tow 2012 Coachman Clipper pop-up - dry weight is 1595 lbs. Our kids are still young but are into riding bikes now, so I’m trying to add in a bike rack for our camping trips. I currently use a Curt 6 inch ball mount since the hitch on the Ascent is a bit high - this makes towing the camper level. I already have dual hitch adapter that I’ve never actually used both hitches on, but now that I’m learning about, I’m understand that cuts your tongue weight in half. With a bike rack carrying 2 adult bikes and 2 kid bikes - I’m probably looking at 200 lbs all together with the weight of the carrier - which would only leave 50 lbs of tongue weight for the pop-up if I’m understanding correctly. Then I found this Curt adapter with the integrated ball mount - which seems to solve that problem. But - this would only give me a 2 1/4 inch . Is there a similar product with a 6 inch or close enough that would keep my tongue weight capacity at 500 lbs and safely let my tow the pop-up and carry bikes at the same time? Thank you!

Hey Jake, how about the Stromberg Carlson Bike Bunk Trailer-Mounted Bike Rack Carrier for A-Frame Trailers # CC-275? This attaches to the A-frame of your pop up and gives you a hitch opening above the propane tank area for your bike rack to attach to. See attached picture to see how it works.

Hey, did you get a chance to try out the Stromberg Carlson Bike Bunk for your pop-up? I'm curious if it worked out for your camping trips with the bikes. Let me know how it went, as it could really help others in a similar situation!
