Can I Mount My Nerf Bars on the Inside so I Can Use the Switch on the Inside to Retract and Extend?

Updated 09/04/2025 | Published 06/25/2025

Question:

I have a 2024 Chevy Silverado 2500 ZR2 with 4inch round side steps. Was wondering if these steps could be mounted under the frame so that they would extend out from under the existing steps on the passenger side using the switch connected inside the cab of the truck.

Hello Doug,

Thank you for the picture, it was most helpful.

Those are a static nerf bar, meaning they are not designed to retract or extend.

If you wanted something that is going to extend and retract I recommend swapping out your nerf bars for the Westin Pro-E Power Motorized Running Boards with LED Lights - Black Aluminum # W69EC.

Are you going to make the swap?

Hey Doug, Did you decide to swap your static nerf bars for the Westin Pro-E Power Motorized Running Boards? I'm curious to know how it worked out for you, as it might help others considering a similar upgrade.

@KateF I did not switch them. I wanted to keep my existing running boards and just add a step on the passenger side that would extend from under the truck frame. Want the step to come out from under the running board that is there since the truck ground clearance is pretty tall.

@DougC We do have steps, but the nerf bar would be in the way and the step would not be any lower than the nerf bar either. This sounds like a good job for a custom fabricator =)
