Roof Rack Recommendation for 2018 Subaru Outback to Replace OEM Bars

Updated 06/03/2025 | Published 05/31/2025

Question:

Hi. I have a 2018 Subaru outback with factory crossbars. I’d like to replace them and use my Thule aero bars but I don’t know how or what I can use to attach them to the roof. Could you offer some advice?

Hey Freddie, we actually don't have any Thule roof racks that fit the raised rails of your 2018 Subaru Outback. If you are looking for a great value roof rack that you could use the Malone AirFlow2 part # MPG216 that you referenced would be exactly what you'd want and would work great. What don't you like about the OEM bars?

I don’t like the OEM ones because they feel loose and they don’t lock down on the other side. I don’t like the flimsy latch. I have (I think) a Xxl Thule cargo carrier and I would not trust the OEM bars on the Hwy at speed. So I would like to replace with something more secure

I don’t see how the Malone bars and feet will fit my Outback since it has the OEM bars. I have Thule feet that would fit just raised bars like the ones shown in the pictures

@FreddieE Are the crossbars attached to raised rails that run front to back or are the rails not raised and you couldn't put your hand under them?

@JamesonC no mine are not. The only open area is right in the middle of the rail system. They don’t look like the ones that are in the pictures for the Malone bars

@FreddieE ahh bummer we oddly don't have that configuration option.
