Can Brake Actuator for Drum Brakes Work With Disc Brakes

Updated 09/12/2025 | Published 05/27/2025

Question:

I want to upgrade my boat trailer hydraulic drum brakes to hydraulic disc brakes. Can I sill use the same hydraulic actuator? I dont care to have the electric lockout for backing up as I use the manual lockout.

Hey Cliff! As it is right now your brake actuator will not work with disc brakes. Disc brakes require a higher hydraulic pressure to operate. Depending on the actuator, you may be able to swap out the master cylinder for one designed for disc brakes. For example, if you have a Dexter Model 60 you can use the # T4820000 or a Model 10/20 # T4747100. If a replacement master cylinder isn't available the only option would be to swap out the coupler.

You can reply below if you have something else and I'll see what is available.
