What Would Cause Right Rear Trailer Axle Tire to Wear On Outside
Updated 09/12/2025 | Published 05/19/2025 >
Question:
Before I replace the tires on my trailer, I have an issue/question. They are 235/80R16 tires on a 35 camper, 2 axle, and I have the right rear tire has outside wear where the other 3 are perfectly fine. I have about 5k miles on the tires but the right rear is worn on the outside edge to no tread, but the rest are perfectly. So before I replace my tires and have one of them prematurely wear out, let me know what I should look at. Thank you

Hey Raymond, It sounds like maybe the trailer was backed into something and the spindle on that rear axle ended up getting bent which is causing the wear issue you mentioned. Normally in this situation we recommending finding an alignment shop that can do trailer alignments and let them see if they can figure out exactly what is wrong. In meantime you could measure distance between front and rear tires on both side of trailer and I'd be willing to bed the distance is different.
The part # PRG80235 you referenced would be a solid choice for a replacement tire in the size ST235/80-16 though.

Hey Raymond, did you have a chance to check the alignment of your trailer or measure the distance between the front and rear tires? I'm asking because your experience could help others facing similar tire wear issues.
