Demco Hijacker Autoslide Fifth Wheel Hitch or Pullrite for 2022 Ford OEM Pucks

Updated 05/13/2025 | Published 05/06/2025

Question:

I have a 2022 F350 w/6.75foot bed w/Factory 5th Wheel Prep Package. I tow a 2022 Montana 3231 5th wheel - 37foot 5, 16,600 bs GW. I currently use a BandW 3300 hitch and love it, but I get nervous/stressed about backing into tight places and my wife says it gets awful closeinch to the rear of the cab at times. I am looking at autosliders - Pullrite 73RR and DEMCO. Is one clearly better than the other? Will one fit my tuck/trailer combo better than the other? Should I look at other brands as well? Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated. THANK YOU!

Hey Bruce, I would recommend going with the Demco Hijacker Autoslide part # DM8550024 that fits directly to the OEM pucks of your 2022 Ford F-350. The reason I like the Demco better than the Pullrite is because the Demco has an adjustable height unlike the Pullrite and because the Demco has adjustable brackets on the head of the hitch that allow it to lock out to the pin box whereas with the Pullrite you have to order the correct capture plate.

How close to your cab do you think your are getting with your Companion around corners?

With the Companion, I can't tell for sure I close I get while on the road, but I have not had any problems either. Feedback I received before I bought the Companion, was that my combination should be able to execute an 80+ degree turn but not a 90 degree. So my concern is backing into a tight camp or parking spot. I did have one instance coming out of a spot and driving over some uneven terrain where my wife stopped me before I did any damage. It close (within inches) but I was able to get repositioned and out of that situation. Thus the inquiry into slider hitches - otherwise I really do like the B&W Companion.

@BruceA Makes sense! Yeah your experience checks out with the Companion and short bed trucks. Modern trailers are designed to have additional turning clearance with their tapered noses and extended pin boxes but a good portion of the time you don't get the full 90 degree turn...but its pretty rare that you ever end up in a situation where being able to execute a 90 degree turn is actually helpful. Most of the time if you're near 90 it's best to pull forward and try a less extreme turn angle. Have you tried the more rear facing head position of the Companion? I know it's not much clearance but it can be offset a little bit back.

One last question. My pin box is a Trailair Road Armor by Lippert (SN S008869000). After reading through the information detail on the DEMCO 8550024 , it looks like I should install a different set of locking plates - PN DM6171. Would that be correct and advisable?

@BruceA Yes that is correct you would need the capture plate part # DM6171 since you have the Road Armor pin box.
