Do I Add the Weight of the Boat When Figuring Out Tongue Weight When Placing the Axles?

Updated 04/29/2025 | Published 04/26/2025

Question:

Hello, I read the info sheet about adding 2nd axle to boat trailer. My question is when e de determining tongue weight the picture references the trailer weight, does it not matter about total load weight with the boat on the trailer Thanks

No, it does not. You're just using the actual weight of your trailer when you are calculating tongue weight as far as axle placement goes.

I saw the article and picture you were looking at. Since you have a boat trailer the 60/40 rule most likely won't apply for you. If the weight of your boat is more towards the back then going with 50/50 might be a better starting point.

What kind of boat do you have?

@CharlesH I can definitely see the need for adding a second axle. Let me know if you have any more questions or need help tracking down parts.
