Best Roof Rack For 2021 Honda Passport With OEM Roof Rails

Updated 05/07/2025 | Published 04/04/2025

Question:

I own a 2021 Honda Passport. It currently has a naked roof, but am working with Honda to install OEM rails. I own two kayaks. Looking at lift systems to get them on the roof. Need two. First one is the Thule Hullavator. Second is the Malone DownLoader J-Style Cradle Fold Down Kayak Carrier Rack. I need help with identifying the necessary feet and cross bars that will connect with my roof rails. Im pretty sure the cross bars will have to be longer and therefor have to pass through the feet. Would really appreciate your assistance and guidance. Gary Provencher

Hello Gary, thanks for reaching out. Your are getting the OEM raised rails from Honda, correct? If so, what I recommend for a roof rack is the Yakima TimberLine Roof Rack for Raised Rails # Y42GD. This is a full roof rack system so you get your towers and crossbars. It has a 60" aero crossbar with a top channel which should be plenty of room for two kayaks. The Hullavator take up 28-1/2" of crossbar space. So it won't even take up half of your crossbar space. It will also have the necessary overhang past the towers to work with the Hullavator. Then you can have the Malone DownLoader on the other side.

Jesse, Exactly what I was looking for. Once I get the Honda OEM rails installed, I’ll get on this. Thanks for your time and expertise Jesse. Tried figuring it out on my own, but kept getting wrapped around the axle. Clearly needed an expert, and you are it!! Have an awesome remainder of the day Jesse!! GaryP

@JesseM Jesse, Now that I have the rails installed on my Honda Passport, it's time for me to pull the trigger on the rest of the equipment I need based on your expert help. I have a couple of questions: 1) I want to get the Malone Downloader Roof Rack system. e-Trailor offers a package of the Malone Dowloader and the Telos Load Assist for $575.90. However, you can purchase them separately for a total of $565.55 (Malone Downloader ($160.60), Telos Assist ($404.95). Not understanding the price difference. I'm sure I'm missing something. Please clarify. 2) Viewed the following e-Trailer YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=talfFyK4Pos. It was posted 3 years ago, I think. In the video, starting at 9:19, Evangeline states that there is a "T-slot integration hardware kit, and this can replace your clamps. And, instead of using those clamps, you use your T-channel in your crossbars." Then, superimposed on the video is Part Number MPG6604. I searched this number and it didn't pop up, leading me to think it doesn't exist anymore. Please clarify and let me know. The rack system I will be getting is Yakima Roof Rack - Y42GD and it has the T-track channels. I'm close to placing the order. Looking forward to your response. Sincerely, Gary Provencher

@GaryP Sometimes our pricing is weird like that. I won't pretend to understand why, but if it is less expensive to piece the parts our separately then by all means please do so. The # MPG6604 kit you mentioned is no longer available. We sold our last one about 2 years ago. Let me know if there is anything else I can do.
