Why are There Multiple Sizes of Crossbars for a 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan

Question:

There are so many options for cross bars for 2024 Tiguan with sunroof. VW said they partner with Thule for their rack systems. Thule website says to get 50 inch cross bars with the raised rail system with car. why are there multiple size options for cross bars when thule says 50 inch? is bar overhang over the rails recommended or better to have them stop by the rails?

Hey Sacha, there are multiple size options for your Tiguan because certain accessories like the Thule Hullavator Pro # TH898 require 4" to 8" of overhang, so if the bars are too short then you wouldn't be able to use it. Some folks also carry multiple accessories on their bars, so the longer the better.

Thule likely recommends the 50" bars because they're the most versatile size wise, meaning a 50" set of bars will give you enough space to use just about anything.

Thank you. For 50 inch cross bars for most versatility which ones do you suggest for best quality and budget. All Thule stuff with is is bars, 4 feet and 4 locks is like $600

@Sacha Yeah Thule can be pretty pricey..I'd go with the Yakima # Y39YD. These are a bit cheaper and work just as good if not better than the Thule's.

@BryceD thanks for the suggestion. Is the Yakima # Y39YD a complete set with 2 cross bars, feet and locks? any upcoming spring sales?

@Sacha Hey Sacha, no sales that I'm tracking but I can double check, and yes this kit includes both crossbars and feet but the locks are sold separately with # Y07202.
