What is Cushioned Equalizer with Shorted Distance between Front and Rear Bolts

Updated 03/24/2025 | Published 03/21/2025

Question:

I have a 2011 keystone outback 295RE that came with trail air equalflex. I want to replace them as they seem to be a bit worn. I wanted to use road armor but the front/back holes in it are 6 inches apart. However, my current equalflex holes are only about 5 inches apart. I cant find any equalflex type units on your site designed for 5 inch hole spacing. Do you have any that will work, or can I use the 6 inch hole spacing on the road armor?

Hey Dan, I would be willing to bet that if you jacked the trailer up a bit it would allow the worn out equalizer to stretch out a bit and it would be a little longer. That said the shortest (front to back) cushioned equalizer we offer that would work to replace your Equa flex would be the Dexter part # K71-652-00 which has the distance between the bolts of 5-3/4 inches. Your Equa flex was originally this long as well.

Thanks Jameson. Based on your note it appears that my old one is 5.75 inches so would the road armor, at 6 inches, work? And do I need to measure the distance from top bolt to the swivel points on each side?

@Dan 5-3/4 inch is close enough that a 6 inch dimension there would work. The width doesn't have to be super precise but you do want it pretty close. Vertical height is the same. You want it to be close but doesn't affect much aside from small change in trailer height.

Also, I have tandem 5200# Dexter axles. Trailer is 9000# gross. When it says the Dexter suspension that you suggested is for 6000# trailer does this mean per axle or total trailer weight?

@Dan That 6,000 lb weight figure is per axle.

Last question. Another e trailer staffer noted the moreryde is best and ez flex the worst. Accurate? If so I may try moreryde but will measure first. Quote: "Expert Reply: If you want the best, it's the MORryde Rubber Equalizers for Tandem Axle Trailers part # MR87ZR. These are the best as they offer the most travel which is basically how much that rubber bushing compresses and the more it compresses, the better ride quality you'll have. The next best option is the Road Armor, followed by the Equa-Flex, followed by the E-Z Flex in that order."

@Dan I'm not sure who wrote that but the MORryde is a really solid option and it's what I recommend all the time. I like the MORryde Alltrek 4000 since it has vertical and horizontal cushioning.
