How do I Know How Much Weight my Gooseneck Horse Trailer Can Handle?

Updated 10/27/2025 | Published 03/21/2025

Question:

Im checking the safety of my new gooseneck horse trailer. The trailer GVWR is 8990. Pin weight with horses loaded is 2600. Empty pin wt is 2350. There is no sticker on it that describes trailer max cargo wt. Horses combined wt is 2950. Trailer on scale, empty and alone is 7560. The truck is capable of the combined and cargo wts. Is the trailer safe?

Hey Terry, thanks for reaching out!

Your trailer GVWR is the max weight that your trailer can be when it's fully loaded. Since the trailer weighs in at 7,560 lbs at empty and you're loading up 2,950 lbs of horses, it means you'll be overloading your trailer.

I'd be interested to know what the year/make/model is of your gooseneck horse trailer. I find it odd that the GVWR only allows 1,430 lbs to be added to the trailer, especially since horses aren't necessarily light creatures.

What exact trailer do you have? I'd like to look it up just to see what the specs are.

Hey Terry, were you able to find the specs for your gooseneck horse trailer? Knowing what you discovered could help others double-check their trailer weight ratings too. Your update could make it easier for the next person with the same concern.
