Do I Need a Braking System to Flat Tow a 2WD Ford Ranger?

Updated 03/21/2025 | Published 03/17/2025

Question:

I’m looking at flat towing my 2002 Ford Ranger (manual 2WD) behind a 35’ motorcoach and was reading the supply list from the thread and am wondering if the braking system is necessary. The motorhome has compression brake. Thanks.

Hey Tim! A supplemental braking system like the Blue Ox Patriot item # BLU37TR is required by law in most states and all Canadian providences when flat towing a vehicle. While a 2002 Ranger can most likely be stopped by a large motorhome without a braking system. It is required and takes the strain off of not only your motorhome but also the tow bar and baseplate.

Here are the rest of the parts you'll need to flat tow your 2WD Ford Ranger:

Tow Bar and Safety Chains - etrailer SD Non-Binding Tow Bar for Roadmaster Crossbar-Style Base Plates item # e44ZR

Base Plate Kit - Roadmaster Crossbar Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms item # 483-1

Wiring Harness - Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit item # RM-15267

High Low Adapter - The tow bar needs to be within 3" of level. If you measure the height of the inside top of the hitch receiver tube on your RV, and the height difference is more than 3 inches above/below the base plate tab height, you'll need a high/low adapter. I have linked a FAQ article that explains all this in more detail along with our selection of adapters.

If you have any additional questions go ahead and throw them into the comment box below and I will be happy to help you.

Thanks for the update Jerred. Will the Blue Ox Patriot item # BLU37TR work with other vehicles in case I decide to use another vehicle to flat tow? Would I be able to use the Blue Ox Patriot item # BLU37TR on other vehicles? Thanks again Jerred, Tim

@TimS You're welcome! Yes, it will. That's one of the best parts of using a portable braking system like the Blue Ox Patriot item # BLU37TR. It's easily capable of being transferred to another vehicle.
