Question:
Do I need a specific Brake controller for my 2008 GMC Envoy or can I use any controller? Thanks

Hey Jim! Brake controllers are not vehicle specific, however, sometimes their are specific custom-fit harnesses that plug into your port under the dash (if your vehicle has one). Otherwise, a universal wiring option is necessary. Let's dig into yours.
For your 2008 GMC Envoy, there is actually no plug and play adapter, so every brake controller will need to be hardwired in under the dash. The Tekonsha Voyager Trailer Brake Controller w/ Plug-In Harness - 1 to 4 Axles - Proportional # TK29ER you were looking at is a great product and will get the job done on a budget, but I'm partial to the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 4 Axles - Proportional # 90195 due to it's upgraded LCD display, automatic leveling (360 degree mounting range), and built-in diagnostics.
I attached an install video for this brake controller being hardwired into a trailblazer which is similar to the Envoy.
If you don't have a 7 way on the back of your vehicle yet, you'll also need Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness 7-Way and 4-Pole Flat Connectors # C55774 which plugs into the factory port under the bumper.
