Question:
I have a 1999 Ford Explorer XLT with a 5L engine. I want to pull a 2300 pounds camper. My camper has electric brakes and the wiring. What do I need to install my electric controller on my vehicle please? Thank you for the help.

Hello Stephane,
Great question, let's get you the right wiring so we can get you out camping! You are going to need 2 different wiring kits to be able to use your brake controller.
First you are going to need to need the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C55345, this wiring is a little more simple to install as it is considered a "plug-n-play" as it installs with connectors through your back tail lights. This wiring is what gets all your lights working. You will need to run a power line with a fuse from the batter back to the rear of the vehicle.
Then we are going to build off of that wiring to get you ready for a brake controller by installing the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat - 10 Gauge Wires # ETBC7. This wiring takes quite a bit more work to install than the 4 flat, you will need to run the brake wire down, install some amps, etc (please refer to wiring diagram that I attahced). I do not have an install video on a 1999, but I do have one on the 1996 Explorer that I attached for you to take a look at to see if it is something you feel comfortable installing.
You didn't mention that you needed a hitch or ball-mount so I didn't include one. If you do need those other towing components just say the word and I will get you those part numbers.
Do you have your first trip planned for when things are set up? If so, where are you going?

Hey Stephane, how did things go getting the brake controller wiring set up on your Explorer? Were the Curt 4-way harness and the ETBC7 kit a good match for your camper’s brakes? Your update could make it easier for others working on a similar setup.
