How to Lock a 1970 Camper to Truck When No Hole Exists for Padlock

Updated 10/30/2025 | Published 02/17/2025

Question:

Looking for a way to lock my 1970 camper hitch when on my truck and hauling. There is no hole to use a padlock and lock it shut. Thank you,

Hey Beverly, thanks for reaching out!

If your older coupler doesn't have a hole through it for a locking pin, then we'll either need to get you setup with a replacement coupler, like the A-Frame Trailer Coupler # CA-5210-B, or you'll need to carefully drill a hole through the latch on your coupler and use a pin lock like the etrailer Surge Brake Coupler Lock # e98888.

Aside from that there just simply aren't any options that fit over your coupler while it's connected to your tow vehicle.

Hey Beverly, how did things go with securing the hitch on your 1970 camper? Were you able to use a pin lock after drilling the latch, or did you decide to go with the replacement coupler instead? Your update could make it easier for others with older campers to find a good solution.
