Hey Gary, thanks for reaching out. When using the etrailer Anti-Rattle Hitch Collar # e38FV, you will want to check the wing nut every time you tow. Anytime you change accessories, or load/unload you will want to check and make sure it is tight. As long as you do this, you will not have to worry about it coming loose unexpectedly.

Why can’t it be designed with more kind of locking nut or other locking device?

@GaryG Good question. The idea was we wanted to design something that could be a tool-free install. A lot of other anti-rattle devices require use of a wrench to tighten a nut. These can be a pain to put on and take off. That is the main reason for the hand-knob/wing nut. We wanted it to be used friendly and easy to install.
