Recommended Roof Rack For A Thule Hullavator On A 2019 Ford Expedition

Updated 10/30/2025 | Published 02/15/2025

Question:

Hello. I have a 2019 ford expedition. I want to install a Thule Hullavator. My understanding is that I cannot use the factory crossbars, correct? Require crossbars with an overhang, correct? However, no thule crossbars with overhang are given as an option for my vehicle. Please advise options. Thank you

Hey Steve,

You're correct that you'll need aftermarket crossbars with 4" - 8" of overhang past the towers otherwise the Hullavator # TH898 will hit the side of the Expedition when lowering it down. Since there isn't a Thule option available I recommend the Yakima TimberLine Roof Rack # Y57SD.

This rack comes with 60" crossbars so you would have enough overhang to clear the side of vehicle and with the TimberLine towers you can easily set the spread for the Hullavator's 24" minimum. The Hullavator requires 28.5" of crossbar space so with 60" bars you could fit a second one on the other side if you have a second kayak to haul.

If you still have questions just let me know and I'd be happy to help.

Hey Steve, how did things go with the Yakima TimberLine roof rack on your Expedition? Did the extra overhang give the Hullavator enough clearance when lowering it down? Your update could make it easier for others setting up a similar kayak system.
