How Can I Secure My Kar Kaddy From a Thief Stealing it While it is Attached to RV & While Storing?

How can the tow dolly be Locked securely to prevent theft? 2 main concerns for theft. 1. After pulling car with RV, car will be removed from the dolly. But the tow dolly may be left connected to the RV hitch. If we leave the site and the car is not close behind the dolly, somone could detach the dolly and steal it. I do not see a hole for example to install a lock or locking pin. What to do? 2. When the dolly is removed from the RV or truck like being stored at home or perhaps too at the RV site, what locking devices are compatible wtih the 2inch ball system to lock it. The Home Depot level locks are not very secure just good for the honestinch people but a thief can easily cut it off with bolt cutters or likely pry it off. Is this unit able to be locked with a Puck Lock type trailer lock such as Proven Industries or Fort Knox? These are much more robust devices. I suppose there is always a heavy chain that could be wrapped around the axle and either the RV, a tree, or other secure item. But I would like to be able to Lock the 2inch coupler too. This is a big investment and dont want it stolen.

Hello David,

Those are very valid concerns, especially in the world we live in today. I have 2 different locks for you to keep those "sticky bandits" away:

1st lock is the InfiniteRule Lock for Demco eZ-Latch Trailer Couplers - 2" and 2-5/16" # IR66FR, this lock is great for keeping the Kar Kaddy attached to the ball. You can also use the lock while it is disengaged but will probably not deter the seasoned "treasure hunter."

2nd lock let's go a step above, or better yet all the way to the top. The engineer that designed this came to etrailer and put on a demonstration for us with a lot of power tools and I was very impressed! The ICON Trailer Coupler Lock for Flat Lip 2" Ball Coupler # AL26DQ is the best coupler lock that I have seen. They will give up long before they ever get this lock off, and will spend too much money on blades even to attempt to take this lock off.

If you wanted to pair those locks with the Trimax Heavy Duty Adjustable Wheel Lock with Padlock - 10" to 18" Wheels # TMX42ZR I think the "discount ninjas" won't even attempt to touch your Kar Kaddy.

Thanks Kate. That is very helpful for options to secure the dolly. I am soon about to purchase a Class C RV that will allow pulling a small car. Once I get past the purchase and get comfotable with things, I will be moving ahead with either purchasing the dolly and locks or go with a flat tow hook up. Flat Tow is another consideration being looked at. But until I start using the RV, I'm not certain how much I will be towing as this will determine which direction to go or just have the car driven to the RV site. I'll probably make a decision in the coming months after purchasing the RV and making a trip or two. As I get closer to a decision, I'll probably also need to consider options for brake and turn lights. I see some wireless options, but again the method may be different for dolly tow vs flat tow. Still in the planning phase with future purchase after the RV purchase and a few trips.

@David My pleasure David. I would definitely test things out as well before committing to that kind of purchase, either option is going to cost a pretty penny. I know that uhaul has some car dollys you can rent, might be worth taking one for a test drive as well. I will say that the benefit of going to flat tow route is not having to find a place at the campgrounds for the dolly as they do take up quite a bit of room. If you were to go the flat tow route, we do have wiring that can be installed to be able to control your brake lights and blinkers, but some do prefer the magnetic lights. My Dad uses the magnetic lights and loves them, but he is flat towing his 1965 Chevy Truck and doesn't want to tie into the wiring. After you get things tested out let me know how you like it. If you drive it around and notice any body roll, we have some great suspension upgrades that will fix that as well.
