Recommended Garage Door Spring for a 7' Wide Enclosed Trailer

Updated 02/02/2025 | Published 01/29/2025

Question:

I purchased a Spartan enclosed trailer. The trailer is 7foot wide and custom ordered 8foot tall interior height. It has a reinforced ramp door with an aluminum ramp extension made of 1/2inch plate. The factory put a single spring on the door. Being an ex commercial garage door technician of 10+ years I know its sprung incorrectly. Its so heavy you can barely pick it up, yet slams at the top from 3/4 closed. Can you suggest what dual spring and drum setup I need to make the tension more balanced through the whole motion? Thank you for your time. Rodney Earwood 4043745498 [email protected]

Hey Rodney! Congrats on your new trailer! If you door weighs 250 lbs or less the Conventional Ramp Door Spring for 8' Wide Enclosed Trailer item # CB250D96SHD will perfectly. You'll just need to trim the shaft down to fit your trailer's inner width. It can be trimmed down to 6-2/3'. I have no idea how heavy your door is but this is our highest capacity ramp door spring.

I have linked a review video below so you can see the functions of this spring demonstrated. What specific model trailer do you have?

Not sure the specific model trailer. I removed tension yesterday and placed the tailgate on a race car scale in the shop. The door attached to the trailer still and sitting on the scale weighed 266# So just over 250# I can cut down the shaft and mount new brackets so I'm curious if you have a dual spring setup for this door.

@Rodney Thanks for checking the weight! Yeah we don't have anything that goes over 250 lbs. The item # CB250D96SHD, we talked about is our highest capacity ramp door spring.
