Recommended Porch Light Replacement For A Truck Bed Camper That Experiences Heavy Road Shock

Updated 11/29/2024 | Published 11/28/2024

Question:

I replace my pickup camper RV Porch LED Utility Light w/ Switch each summer after rough roads because they degrade to a momentarily flicker when turned on. Do you have a rough road worthy one? Would incandescent be better?

Hey John,

Typically LED's would be the better option since the filament of an incandescent bulb is pretty brittle. In your case I'd say there's either an issue with the board the LED's are built into, loose wiring, or an issue with the power source. If the board is going bad on the light then it's either very low quality or you're hitting some super rough roads and would see more than issues than just with the lights.

It's possible that your wire connections came loose or you just have a weak ground for the light so I would check to see if the rough roads vibrated any connections loose. You can also check the voltage at the light with a multimeter # PT89ZR to see if it's getting a full 12 volts. If not then you have an issue with the power source or wiring between the light and power.

If you're wanting to replace the light you'll want one that encases the board in resin like the TecNiq # TN85XR or # TN48XR to prevent any road shock from damaging the LED's.

Thanks, I have checked the wires each time for connection and voltage and always good. My LED lights inside always work. I did replace the light with the same one so maybe it is the LED board like you said. Do the ones you suggested have switches on the the light?

@John Those two do not, but TecNiq makes some very high quality lights that I'd choose if I were in your situation. You'd need to install a switch inline with these lights in order to turn them off/on. We have a variety of switches that would work if you're ok with that?
