Should Car on Car Hauler Trailer Be All the Way Forward in Trailer

Updated 12/15/2025 | Published 11/27/2024

Question:

Hello , I have an 18 foot enclosed car hauler and have read on some trailer safety sites that you want the heavy weight of the car as far towards the front of the trailer or tongue to keep the trailer stable . Is this right ? Also I have other heavy items that go into the trailer with the car is there a good way to disperse the weight through out the trailer or do you want it all up towards the front . Any advice on how to load the trailer safely would be great appreciated . Thanks Chris

Hey Christopher, when towing cars it's typically just best to have the car as far forward as possible so that the trailer doesn't sway when you get up to highway speeds. You need to have the total trailer tongue weight to be between 10 and 15 percent of the total trailer weight otherwise you get sway. With how heavy cars are if you don't have them all the way forward you basically end up with not enough tongue weight which is why it's best to have them as forward as possible.

Hey Christopher, how did things go loading your car and gear in the trailer with the weight toward the front? Your update could make it easier for others trying to balance their loads safely.
