Recommended Gooseneck Hitch and 7-Way Wiring Harness for a 1970 Ford Ranger 250

Updated 12/15/2025 | Published 11/08/2024

Question:

I am wondering if you have a recommendation for a gooseneck hitch that would fit a 1970 Ford Ranger 250 camper special. Same goes for wiring harness that would hook to my horse trailer 7 pin. Thanks

Hey Lee! That's a pretty old truck so we're not going to have anything custom fit for it. The best I can do is the Buyers Products 2-5/16" Fabricators Flatbed Gooseneck Hitch item # 3375613500. You'll need to take this to your local fabricator and have them weld on some steel plates to get this installed for you.

To add a 7-Way connector to your truck you're going to need to install two separate wiring harnesses because there isn't just one that'll do the job. The first one is the Curt 4-Way Flat Trailer Connector w/ 60" Harness and Wire Taps item # C58044. This will splice into your Ford's tail lights and add a 4-way harness to your truck.

The second harness you will need is the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller item # ETBC7. The kit includes a pre-wired 7- and 4-way trailer connector that mounts easily at the rear of your vehicle with an included bracket. This kit is designed for use on a vehicle with an existing 4-way flat trailer connector and plugs directly into it.

Since your horse trailer has a 7-way you are also going to need a brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha Primus IQ item # TK90160. This will allow you to control your trailer's brakes. It comes with everything you need to install it in your Ford truck.

Hey Lee, how did things go with the Buyers Products gooseneck hitch and the wiring setup on your Ford Ranger 250? Were you able to get everything welded and connected for your horse trailer? Your update could make it easier for others working with older trucks.

@JerredH I upgraded my truck so I never had to figure it out. I appreciate the feedback though.
