Can Trailer Taillights be Converted to LED without Causing Dash Error Codes

Updated 11/04/2024 | Published 10/24/2024

Question:

I want to ADD LED taillights to my trailers existing incandescent tail lights. I know that LED conversion can throw codes/CEL/dash warning lights on some cars. I assume LED have a high resitance that the vehicle interprets as bad bulb. If that is the case, adding an LED to the existing low resistance filament bulb in parallel should not cause this problem. Or?

Hey Volker, so you can add LED taillights to your trailer and not have to worry about any of the issues that vehicles have. Trailer wiring circuits drawing less amperage due to using LED lights does not cause the same issues that vehicles have when this is done.

Thank you, that helps greatly. Glad that the trailer/towing circuits of cars are not designed to be 'smart' as those on today's cars that are often very sensitive to changes in draw/resistance. I will proceed with adding two LED tail lights in parellel to the existing filament lights mounted higher up for visibility (in case I am using the rear storage box).

@Volker No prob! Yeah on trailer wiring there isn't a thermal flasher unit that makes things difficult like on vehicles.
