Question:

Why do lippert tells me ,if I want to switch my king pin,it has to be 21k,thats whats on it,but the trailer only weighs 11500..Why would they put a 21k pin on it....want to get the flex air,but dont want to add anymore weight than I have to..thanks

Hi Jesse; the only reason I can really think of is your bolt pattern. If you have a 1621 bolt pattern there is no reason why you wouldn't be able to use the lower rated Curt Flex Air 5th Wheel Pin Box - Lippert 1621 - 18,000 lbs # LC328492 you were looking at. If you have something like a Lippert Rhino the 21k # LC65VR is the only capacity available. The higher capacity will be fine, pin boxes are usually over by quite a bit anyway, but if there is a lower capacity option that can handle your trailer it is the better choice.

Thanks so much,is there much of weight difference from 18k,and 21k..lm new,and hauling it with my gmc 2500 duramax 6.6,trying to keep it as light as I can..have no stickers in doors for payload,and hauling,all websites are giving me different answers..hauled it once and it seemed fine but want to be safe..thanks

@Jesse you mean the actual weight of the pin box itself? There won't be a difference in how much the pin box weighs. The only difference will be the capacity. The 21k version of the 1621 Flex Air # LC369535 weighs 232 lbs just like the 18k version listed above.

@RobinH thanks and one more question if I can,is my 2013 2500 gmc Duramax 4x4,short ok to haul my op,it's 39 ft,13500 fully loaded,I get mixed answers..web tells me a 4k pay load,and 17k fithwheel ..is it safe..

@Jesse what you want to do is look up the 2013 GMC Trailering Guide. This lists out all of the variations within the vehicle models, and shows the towing capacity for a ball hitch and 5th wheel. The only two that would be pushing it are the 2500 Denali HD Standard Box 4WD and 2500HD Series Crew Cab Long Box 4WD since they have a capacity of 14,700 lbs. Even with these it would still be safe to tow your 5th wheel.
