Is There A Torque Spec For The CE Smith Post-Style Guide-On Mounting Hardware
Updated 12/22/2025 | Published 10/15/2024 >
Question:
regarding the CR11452-A replacement bracket hardware kit, do you have any idea what torque spec is advised for safe clamping of post style guide ons? I clamped on a post style guide on by feel with a ratchet but the post came loose during driving. I resecured with a longer rachet but maybe over did it causing some bending of the bracket. I might have over torqued it over fear of the post coming loose while driving. Is there an actual torque spec? thanks

Hey,
So I spoke to CE Smith and they stated they didn't have any actual torque specifications listed for the # CE11452-A and pretty much just left it up to the consumer to decide what their definition of tight is. After talking with them I went our to the warehouse and checked the package as well for the included directions and once again only found it saying to just tighten them.
With these being lock nuts they really shouldn't be able to back off on the threads easily but what might have happened is the U-bolts weren't evenly clamped down which allowed for a bit of movement once the trailer was out on the road picking up vibration. With you tightening the nuts down so much that the brackets started to bend I doubt you'll have an issue again, but I will say that most manufacturers regardless of what the product is will throw in some really small fine print stating to drive around a bit and then recheck the tightness after the initial installation and then routinely check it every so often.
