Cargo Carrier For Honda CR-V That Won't be Damaged by Exhaust

Updated 12/22/2025 | Published 10/11/2024

Question:

I have 2014 Honda CRV and want to buy a hitch carrier. I'm concerned about tailpipe location and possibility of it blowing fumes all over my stuff and even melting any plastic containers I might pack things in. It happened to my son in his Santa Fe. Thanks for all the good info in your earlier answers

Hey Joyce,

Happy we were able to provide you some good info, and your concern about exhaust fumes for a cargo carrier makes perfect sense. Sorry to hear that your son had some troubles, but we can avoid those on your CR-V with the right cargo carrier. I'm going to assume you have a 2" hitch like part # e98868, and what you're going to want is a carrier that provides two things - a rise in the shank and distance from the tailpipe. The perfect option for that is a cargo carrier from Reese:

- 24x60 Reese Cargo Carrier for 2" Hitches # 63153

The # 63153 has a 2-1/2" rise in the shank, and since your hitch is about even with the tailpipe, and the tailpipe points down, this will help avoid the fumes reaching it. Even better though, the cargo carrier measures 12-3/4" from the hitch to the closest part, so the exhaust fumes will dissipate before reaching the cargo carrier.

The only other thing I wanted to mention is that I definitely recommend an anti-rattle lock for peace of mind in security and noise, the Anti-Rattle Hitch Lock # 63232.

Hey Joyce, how did the Reese cargo carrier work out on your CR-V with the hitch setup? Did the extra rise and distance keep the exhaust fumes away from your gear? Your update could make it easier for others worried about the same issue.
