Is Whistling Regulator a Sign that it Needs to be Replaced

Updated 01/12/2026 | Published 09/07/2024

Question:

I had a Marshall 253 regulator on my older trailer. It basically blew apart ?!! and nearly emptied one of my tanks. I replaced it with a Camco one but now it whistles. Should I take the new one back to the store?

Hey Bill, sorry to hear about your gas issues.

I would definitely take your Camco regulator back to the store since regulators aren't supposed to make a whistling noise under normal operation. You can either have them replace it with the same unit, or you can use your refund to get a different one like the JR Products Automatic Changeover 2-Stage Propane Regulator # 37207-30395.

Since this seems to be a recurring theme for you, I recommend checking out the GasStop Emergency Propane Shut-Off Gauges w 18" Hoses and Automatic Changeover Regulator # GS69FR which uses that JR Products regulator along with emergency shut-off pigtails so in the event something goes South, your tanks won't get drained like thy did the first time.

Hey Bill, did you end up swapping out that Camco regulator for the JR Products one? It’d be great to hear if the new regulator stopped the whistling. Your update could make it easier for others dealing with the same issue.
