Recommended Bike Rack for Clearing a Spare Tire on a SUV

Updated 01/12/2026 | Published 09/02/2024

Question:

Will the Thule Apex XT 2, model TH902XT bike rack have enough clearance for a 2004 Honda CR-V with the spare tire mounted on the back of the vehicle? I have already installed a trailer hitch Model Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Class III, 2Receiver Custom Fit from eTrailer. Thanks you! Jim

Welcome back Jim! No, it won't have enough clearance. The closest part of the Thule Apex XT Bike Rack item # TH9024XT sits 7" from the hitch pin hole. The hitch pin hole on your Draw-Tite item # 75690 sits 9" back from the edge of the spare tire carrier on your 2004 Honda CR-V.

A comparable alternative would be the Yakima RidgeBack Bike Rack item # Y02457. The closest part of this bike rack sits 9-1/2" out from the hitch pin hole. It has a 40 lbs per bike capacity.

I have attached a review video below so you can see the features of this bike demonstrated.

Hey Jim, did the Yakima RidgeBack bike rack give you the extra clearance you needed with the spare tire on your CR‑V? Knowing how it fit could really help others with the same setup.
