Can A 2014 Ford Explorer Sport Be Flat Towed

Updated 01/27/2026 | Published 08/26/2024

Question:

Can you flat tow a 2014 ford explorer sport. It has a 3.5L EcoBoost and is Awd. If it can be flat towed, I plan to install a 12 Volt lube pump for the transmission. Thank you, Glenn

Hi Glenn,

Based on what I can find in the online manual for the 2014 Ford Explorer Sport the 3.5L and 3.7L engines are capable of being flat towed. In order to flat tow your Explorer you'll need a tow bar, baseplate, braking system, safety cables, and tow bar wiring. I have the following recommendations:

Baseplate: If you have adaptive cruise control then I recommend the Demco Classic Base Plate Kit # DM9518299. If you do not have adaptive cruise control then you can go with the Demco # DM9518289 instead.

Tow Bar: etrailer SD Non-Binding Tow Bar # e34ZR. This tow bar comes with safety cables included so you won't have to buy them separately and also have a built-in rise/drop to help keep itself level between the motorhome and Explorer.

Tow Bar Wiring Kit: Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267. This kit will transfer your light signals from the motorhome to the tail lights of the Explorer.

Braking System: If your motorhome has hydraulic brakes then you'll want the Demco Stay-IN-Play Duo # SM99251. If it instead has air brakes then you'll want the # SM99243 instead.

I recommend reviewing your specific model's owner's manual to ensure you're following all the rules and setup steps Ford has listed for your vehicle.

Hey Glenn, how did things go getting your Explorer Sport ready for flat towing? Did the Demco base plate and etrailer tow bar fit the way you needed? Your update could make it easier for the next person setting up a similar tow setup.
