Can Quick Grip Mounting for Thule Atlantis 1800 Be Opened up for Servicing
Updated 11/20/2025 | Published 08/11/2024 >
Question:
Hi- I recently purchased a used Thule Atlantis 1800 in great condition, but with one of the four QuickGrip Mount Assemblies TH05738 frozen. The knob won't turn, but both clamp jaws move freely. While trying another different one of the four, IT jammed as well; same issue, where the jaws move, & the knob won't. This "feels" like more of a mechanical issue, than it being seized by rust, esp when it happened to the the second mount. Is there any way to open these up to see, before I invest in new ones, (which, of course, cost more than the box)? They don't seem to be easily disassembled, or have any kind of release tab, etc Thanks!/Rob

Hey Rob, thanks for reaching out!
The Quick Grip Mount Assembly # TH05738 has a screw in the middle on the underside (see attached photo) that you can try removing to see if that lets you get inside to fix anything. I haven't done this on my end so I don't know what you'll find, but if your Quick Grips are already broken then you don't really have anything to lose.
If you aren't able to fix it then you can use the part above to replace them.

This is the fix: "I applied the good ol' wide mouth pliers to the grey knob, and voila! the knob came loose with a small pop. Must have just been stuck with some crud buildup or such." I still gave the threads a shot of lubricant spray, but wide mouth pliers is the fix

Thank you so much for getting right back to me, Jon! I've tried removing the screw you mentioned, but as far as I can tell it's only function seems to be to attach the cushion/plate on the bottom of the box where it sits on the roof rack rail. What really seems to be holding the two halves of the unit together are the seemingly immovable rivets on either side of it, ( visible in your picture directly above the "claws"; I'm unable to attach my own picture) I guess my next move is to drill those out because as you say, Ihave nothing to lose! Thanks again Jon! Best/Rob
