Adding Rhino-Rack Tracks and Crossbars to 1986 Suzuki Samurai

Question:

Hello, I am looking at the Rino Rack Y02-480B canopy topper rack- tracks and bars as a possible roof system for my 1986 Suzuki Samurai with a full fiberglass top. I understand the tracks can be cut down to length from their original size, which will work as I will need to shorten them up a bit about 50-58 inches. I do have a couple of questions. 1 Do the tracks come pre-drilled tapped with holes? I have existing holes in my top from an old rack system that I would like to use if possible. 2 Can the 53-inch crossbars be cut down to length as they would be a bit wide hang pretty far off the sides of my Suzuki? Thanks Jeff

Hi Jeff; since you want to modify the tracks and the crossbars I wouldn't get the # Y02-480B. The tracks can be cut down but not the crossbars. Shorter tracks are also available which might save you some work. You can choose from the following based on length:

-Rhino-Rack RTC-Style Roof Rack Tracks - Channel Mount - 37-1/2" Long # RTC95JW

-Rhino-Rack RTC-Style Roof Rack Tracks - Channel Mount - 55" Long # RTC14

-Rhino-Rack RTC-Style Roof Rack Tracks - Channel Mount - 63" Long # RTC16

You will also need the Rhino-Rack Quick Mount Legs for Vortex Aero Crossbars # RRRLT600H. Since the 54" crossbars will be too long you could use the Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Crossbars - Aluminum - Black - 46" Long # RRVA118B-2 or 49" Long # RRVA126B-2 instead. The end result will be the same, you're just choosing the individual parts of the rack so it better suits your vehicle.

The tracks do not come pre-drilled. However, you will need to follow the measurements in the instructions when mounting the new bolts. What I would do is drill some additional holes in the track where your existing holes are located and add in some extra bolts # RR72UB or # RR25XB (4 pack) along with extra butyl patches # RR65HB to keep it sealed up. You can double check the installation instructions for the tracks below to see if the holes will line up with what you have but I'm guessing they won't.
