Do Both Cables of a Split Reel Winch Extend/Retract at Same Speed

Updated 08/07/2024 | Published 08/06/2024

Question:

Hi Jameson, I have a question about using a split reel winch. Will the line speed for each cable be the same ? It is important that each cable moves the same distance for each rotation of the handle.

Yes, the line speed of both cables on a split reel winch like the Dutton Lainson part # DL10952 would be the exact same. Basically it's just one spool that has a divider down the middle so that you can use two cables that will retract and extend at exact same speed.

Thank you Jameson. I also wanted to know if it would remain the same if the cable spools normally on one drum, but starts stacking up on the other drum.

@HS Hey sorry I didn't address your second question! I would say that it's not super important that both lines end up moving the exact same amount. There will be variances due to how the cable wraps around the drum. One side might end up slightly different based on that but for most situations it would be such a small percent difference that it won't affect anything.
