Do I Need To Program My BMW When Installing The Stealth Hitch SH52VR
Updated 01/22/2026 | Published 08/02/2024 >
Question:
I asked a trailer shop to install SH52VR on my 2018 X5d, the shop said I need to bring my car to dealer for coding the shop cant do coding themselves. Then, BMW dealer told me they cant code for me that as the trailer hitch is not BMW OEM trailer hitch. My first question is, do I need to code SH52VR after installation? Second, what do I get from my car after coding SH52VR? Finally, who else can help me code the trailer hitch if even dealer doesnt do that for me?

Hello Joe, thanks for reaching out. Yes, your BMW will need to be programmed after installing the Stealth Hitch # SH52VR. The programming basically allows the vehicles computer to properly communicate with the trailer wiring. The programming is actually a service that Stealth Hitch offers, and it can be done remotely. You can give Stealth Hitch a call at 833-694-4824 for more details. Keep in mind that this programming needs to be scheduled 1 week in advance of your hitch install. Don't hold it against your installer though, as most typical installers are not going to be familiar with this process.

Hey Joe, were you able to get the Stealth Hitch on your X5d programmed through Stealth Hitch’s remote service? Knowing how that process went could really help others who run into the same coding issue with non-OEM hitches.
