Can I Use 5/8" Pins Instead Of Bolts For A Channel Mount Coupler?

Updated 01/20/2026 | Published 07/30/2024

Question:

I have a 2024 Suretrac dump trailer that has an adjustable channel coupler. Instead of using these bolts to hold it on can you use pins for quicker swapping of the coupler and more importantly for removing the coupler when not in use as a theft deterrent. From the factory the bolts although tight still allows some slop in the coupler within the channel so swapping to pins should not have any effect on the clamping force as there is no clamping effect with the bolts as the channel is so thick it does not squeeze onto the coupler. After looking at various trailers that slop seems normal however a local trailer dealer uses washers to shim the width so slop is eliminated. Is that required or not?

Hello Matthew. The grade 8 5/8" bolts are generally rated for upwards of 27,000 to 30,000 lbs. Most 5/8" hitch pins are rated for way more than this, so swapping your bolts for 5/8" pins will be just fine. Just make sure you are using good quality pins of the appropriate length. There will probably be more rattle when using pins over bolts so adding washers is definitely a good idea to help eliminate slop.

Hey Matthew, how did things go after switching to the 5/8 pins on your Suretrac dump trailer coupler? Did adding the washers help cut down the rattle like you hoped? Your update could make it easier for others thinking about the same change.

@JesseM yes the washers do the trick to reduce slop in the connection point. Even without them it's not a big deal either. Have the flexibility to remove the coupler entirely with the use of pins far outweighs the alternative of using bolts for me

@MatthewD Thanks for the follow-up Matthew, I appreciate you sharing that. Good to hear the washers helped tighten things up, even if the slop wasn’t a major issue to begin with. I agree with you, the ability to pull the coupler completely using pins is a big advantage over bolts and makes the setup much more user-friendly. That’s helpful feedback for anyone considering the same change.
