Can The Plastic On A 7-Way Connector Warp Or Shrink Over Time?

Updated 02/05/2026 | Published 07/28/2024

Question:

After all these years I am realizing my male Pollack 7-pole adapter does not lock into the female Pollak on the VW wiring harness. Furthermore it does not seem to push all the way in. Is it possible the vehicle part has shrunk a bit? This is an old 2007 installation and the only reason Im checking is that Im getting some error codes. Thanks for any help. 2006 Volkswagen Touareg V10

Hello Laurence. I suppose it is possible that the plastic on the connector could have shrunk or warped which is causing it not to fit right. Although, this is not a common issue for these kinds of connectors. It is more common for the pins to get dirty and corroded which could cause connectivity issues or error codes. It is hard to say with 100% certainty that this is the case with your plug, but since it is so old, replacing both ends with new ones will certainly help towards getting things working again.

Hey Laurence, did replacing the old Pollak connectors clear up those error codes on your Touareg? Knowing how the new ends worked out could really help others dealing with aging wiring setups.

@JesseM Hello Jesse, I really can not remember much about this problem:. I will say this, it is possible for the Toureg's harness end to fall away from the Pollack adapter. Better to tape them together. Also, be sure to check address 69 Trailer Electronics for faults. I never travel without my Ross-Tech cable and lap-top as the VAG electronics throw many disabling codes in my car's 72 control modules. Some of those faults will shut a module down with no notice.

@LaurenceG Thanks for sharing, Laurence! Good tip about taping the harness to the Pollak adapter - makes perfect sense. Definitely good to know about those faults too. Sounds like a pretty common occurrence so I'm sure this will be very helpful for other VW owners.
