Can the Yakima Spare Ride be installed without a spare tire. Just attach it directly to the tire mount?

The Yakima SpareRide part # Y02599 actually depends on the spare tire being in place to provide some support. If the spare tire was not in place, the downward force that the bikes exert could cause the mounting stem to bend.
I would not recommend using the rack without the spare tire being in place. I have confirmed this with Yakima.
