Replacing The Spindle On A Tandem Axle Boat Trailer

Updated 02/03/2026 | Published 07/16/2024

Question:

I have a 1999 Stratos 21SS Extreme with a dual axle trailer, the spindle on the rear axle needs replaced, but not sure which spindle I need, this axle has the surge brake on it, can you tell me which spindle I would need, I do know it is a weld in spindle, not a bolt in

Hi Randy,

The spindles we offer are more for OEM use for companies that actually build axles and trailers and would honestly not be the best option for your situation. Welding on the spindle requires extreme precision so that everything is perfectly straight. Usually the welder will have to use a special jig to line the spindle up with the axle tube, which typically ends up costing more than just replacing the axle. If you know someone that would be capable of doing it for cheap that's one thing but you'll likely find it's more cost effective to just replace the axle.

There isn't a guide to tell us what your current spindle is but you can take some measurements to determine the bearing sizes and give us a better idea of what you have/need to get. With a caliper # PTW80157 you'll need to measure the axle tube diameter and points B, C, and D from the diagram below.

If you decide to replace the axle entirely then you'll also need to measure from hub face to hub face and from center to center of the spring seats to determine the correct length. Let me know what you find and what you'd like to do and we can get you to all set.

Hey Randy, what did you end up finding when you measured the axle tube and spindle points with the caliper? Once you had those numbers, were you able to decide whether to replace the spindle or go with a new axle? Your update could make it easier for others facing the same repair.
