Can Friction Sway Control Ball Attach Directly to Trailer Frame

Updated 02/03/2026 | Published 07/08/2024

Question:

I would like to add a sway bar to my TT. I have a unique a-frame trailer that uses a steel L channel as part of the a-frame. The bolting plate for the 1-1/4@ ball for the sway bar will not fit on the frame of the trailer. Would like to instead drill a 5/8” hole and bolt a 1-1/4” ball directly to frame instead of mounting with a plate. See any issues with that?

Hey Phil, I don't see why that wouldn't work with the Curt friction sway control part # 17200 but we don't have additional install tips for that type of install.

Hey Phil, did you end up trying that direct-mount setup for your Curt friction sway control? I'm curious how it worked with your L-channel frame. Your results could really help others with similar trailer designs.
