Can An RV Awning Fabric Be Replaced At Home Or Should You Pay Someone To Do It

Updated 02/03/2026 | Published 07/02/2024

Question:

I just bought a fixer-upper camper and it needs new awning fabric. Do I have to take it to someone to replace the old one, or is this something I can do? Thanks for your help.

Hey Judy,

Replacing awning fabric is something that can be done at home but you'll want to hand a couple of helpers to help with process since most awning tubes are pretty long and awkward to handle. If you haven't gotten the fabric yet then you'll want measure from the center of one arm to the center of the other arm to determine the correct length. If you measure just the fabric you'll end up with something shorter than what you originally had.

The steps to remove/replace the fabric are pretty much the same for each brand but the connections for the roller tube to the heads somewhat differ. If you want to send me that length and maybe some pictures of your awning I can get you some more detailed instructions.

Hey Judy, how did things go with replacing the awning fabric on your camper? Once you measured between the arms, were you able to find the right size and get it swapped out? Your update could make it easier for others tackling the same project.
