Are 1,000 lb e2 Round Bars Too Much for a 412 lb Tongue Weight Trailer

Updated 07/09/2024 | Published 06/30/2024

Question:

I was told my e2 Hitch 1,000 lb. round bar could damage the frame of a 3,768 lb. travel trailer with a hitch weight of 412 lb. Could I adjust tension on hitch and L-brackets, or go with swapping out Spring bars? Thank you.

Hey Ed, thanks for reaching out!

The Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control # FA94-00-1061 will be too much for your trailer if the 412 lb weight rating you mentioned is with everything fully loaded. If that's the dry tongue weight, then you will potentially be able to get the tongue weight within the 600 lbs - 1,000 lbs range that this hitch requires so it's actually effective and not too stiff. Be sure your loaded tongue weight is 10-15% the weight of the loaded trailer though, as that's the first step to having an effective ride quality.

If you have 412 of tongue weight when your trailer is fully loaded then you'll want to swap out both of your round bars with the 600 lbs TW Bar # FA94-02-0699 so your tongue weight range is lowered to 400 lbs - 600 lbs.

I don't think the higher rated system will damage your trailer, but it will definitely make the ride quality stiff and not as effective as the crossbars with the correct range.
